Fun while it lasted. Turns out the Chrysler 3.3 doesn’t do well with boost. I think that was an STi hood scoop? It fed a top mount intercooler.

You’re gonna leave us hanging with that?! More, man! We need the info, the 411, the SR20, the ins!

five pointed star hood ornament clearly messed up the airflow into the intercooler scoop, thus failure

Added a few more photos including this one

Dual exhausts. Wonderful sound. Too irritating from inside though. I loved the OZ Opera wheels.

does it “not like boost” or does it “not like being leaned out while under boost?”
inquiring minds want to know.

I guess I should have expected Oppo would want more info. It was a long time ago and actually a bad memory I’d rather forget. The minivan itself was a lot of fun for the month or two before it threw a rod out the block.

haha! Good one! I thought of that! (no I didn’t ) and put the i ntercooler on the other side of the hood ornament.

I know the 2.4 can. Even has the port where the oil line goes. Have to tap the threads and drill into the block. SRT-4 is a much easier swap. (wanted to turbo my 96 caravan, but low on funds)

I learned afterwards the 3.3 really isn’t built enough for boost. See my other comment - should have used forged rods.

Turbo minivans are too cool.

Did you star my entire post? I didn’t know you could do that. If so, h

The PT Cruiser Touring had the SRT4 motor and a turbo from the factory right?

Money shot. Garrett something or other.

PT Cruiser GT from what I looked up.

I’ve since moved to Colorado but I think I lived relatively
near Long Voyager when I was in WI. Too bad - could have spent hours talking Chrysler minivans.

You found actual exhaust headers for your minivan?
![]() 03/25/2019 at 22:26 |
|
That’s because the 2.4 block is derived from the 2.0 block which is derived from the 2.2/2.5 K block.
If you want to turbo a ‘96 non-OBD-II, you do it as a 2.2 Turbo II/A555 5 speed. (There is such a thing as a non-OBD-II ‘96 minivan.)

The 3.3 isn’t built enough to be an engine.
Sincerely, someone who had to deal with those things under warranty.

oh hell no! You’re probably not surprised to learn that no one makes performance parts for a Caravan. Gave away a lot of $$$ to someone to make them. Was pretty though.

That's what I figured. Wouldn't be legal in California.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 00:28 |

It's probably Providence that you threw a rod because if you hadn't you'd have thrown a transmission.

It will handle low boost, 6 lbs, quite easily. They really don’t like much more than that.
If you want to add boost, the 3.0 is really the best option. They can handle around 500 whp on stock internals.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 07:35 |
|
How are you going to post that and not have more info?
![]() 03/26/2019 at 09:49 |

How do we have 2 ‘90s MOPAR minivan aficionados from Wisconsin here? I feel like I’m missing out and should join the club.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 10:05 |

Or you get a 6G72 variant.
They can handle substantial boost on stock internals, stock fuel system (outside a RRR), and stock ecu.

If you ever get back in the area feel free to hit me up.

Gotta have duals:
You definitely have to find the right muffler though, the 3.3/3.8s resonate something fierce.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 10:08 |
|
You definitely should!
![]() 03/26/2019 at 10:23 |
|
No, they can’t. Internals and fuel between turbo and non-turbo are completely different.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 12:09 |
|
The SOHC 12V motor can handle 300+hp on stock internals, while needing only a RRR to keep fuel in check. The ECU can tune for 8-10 lbs without issue, which easily puts them over 300hp/320-ft-lbs.
Once you get over 8-10 lbs the ECU is outside it’s range and the injectors will no longer be able to handle it.
The engine itself can handle 500+whp without issue on stock internals.
Are they different internals, yes. Does that mean the SOHC 12V variant cannot handle big power, no. It’s been proven many times over to be a very capable platform, easily surpassing what the 2.5 Turbo can handle.

The people claiming this need to put down the crack pipe.

I had quad tips! I should have met you 20 years ago. I forget what the muffler was - probably Flowmaster or equiv. And regret deleting the resonator.

Boost was right around 6, I think. I also had a 92 Caravan that I really liked DDing. Should have turbo’d that - 3.0 - but didn’t know better at the time.

That thought actually makes me feel better about this.

I forgot about the turbo minivan episode of my life - it was 20 odd years ago - and the
minivan theme jogged my memory. I originally posted only the two photos thinking people weren’t going to be that interested. Not sure what that thought process was about given I posted to Oppo.
A hard drive failure 10 years ago erased most of my old photos. Just happened to recover a few on a different drive. I tried to forget about the turbo minivan - people issues.
I
ran
lowered suspension (Dodge
Daytona
front struts which I’m sure you know about and flattened rear springs
) which you can tell in the other photos
. With the wide wheels and tires, it really handled well (for a minivan
). It was fun to drive.

How much did the headers cost you to have made? By the way, I applaud your creativity
on all this.

Thank you. It was 20 years ago and I explained to Long_Voyager that I tried to forget this project due to other reasons. I don’t remember the cost other than it was a lot. But I was working at the time so I didn’t care about money in those days. Another
example of the
stupid money
spending in those days
;
I sent
the cams
out to some
place in Tennessee to get reground since no one makes performance cams for the 3.3.

I would be willing to bet something wasn’t tuned quite right, which caused an early demise. The 3.3/3.8 can’t handle big boost like the 3.0, but 6 shouldn’t have caused an issue if it was running properly.

The black one was running 2.5" straight, into a Walker SFX muffler, then split into duals at the rear. It had some bark, but it was never annoying. No cat, no resonator.
My 94 on the other hand has been a fight to get it to sound right. It’s also running 2.5" into a Magnaflow tube ( using like a resonator ), then into a Walker Quietflow SS muffler for a Camaro where it splits into duals. It’s tolerable now, but still a little louder than I would like.

I bet you’re right. I was going for looks and had no idea what I was doing engine-wise. There wasn’t much of an internet back then.
I modded my B5 S4 to street unsuitable. Maybe because of those experiences, I’ve gotten out of modifying cars. I kept my current 98 non turbo Forester engine stock and no interest in raising the boost on my Transit.
The 87 325 and S4 have been sitting - you’ve prompted me to think of doing something with them, maybe I’ll ask for Oppo’s opinion about what I should do.
Wish I still had the 92 Caravan with the 3.0 - that was worthless enough to go nuts with experimenting.

It wasn’t until the last 10-15 yrs that the early 90s Mopars really started gaining a strong following for performance reasons.

yeah, I mention elsewhere that back then I didn’t know much and there wasn’t much internet and info.

I’m a great influence.
Who doesn’t love cheap to buy, cheap to modify, cheap to maintain vehicles?
